Made in China, more expensive in China

          iPad comes to China

Chinese consumers have to pay premium prices for the foreign-brand products assembled in China, the Los Angeles Times reported on Tuesday. The newspaper perused a gamut of foreign products made in China -- Apple's laptop, Sony's flat screen TV, Buick LaCrosse sedan, Nike sneakers, Budweiser beer and Haagen-Dazs ice cream -- finding an ironic paradox that they actually cost 20 to 40 percent higher here, frustrating China's notoriously frugal customers. Apple 'stunned' to find iPhones show too many bars

Apple Inc said Friday that it was "stunned" to find that its iPhones have for years been using a "totally wrong" formula to determine how many bars of signal strength they are getting.

Apple said that's the reason behind widespread complaints from users that the latest model, iPhone 4, can show a sudden plunge in signal strength when they hold it in a way that covers a small black strip on one edge of the phone. Users have jokingly called this the "death grip" for the phone. [Full story]

Apple offers free case to iPhone 4 users

Apple Inc on Friday said it will give iPhone 4 users free protective cases to address the smartphone's signal problem.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs made the announcement at a press conference held at the company's headquarters in Cupertino, California.

"Every iPhone user is going to get a case. There will be refunds to people that already got a bumper," he said. [Full story]

          Locals spooked by iPhone 4

Media reports of Apple's iPhone 4's reception-challenged antenna appear to be hurting gray-market sales and affecting prices of the device in China.

The price of the smuggled US version iPhone 4 in China's gray market dropped by about 70 percent from 20,000 yuan to 6000 yuan within the last month as antenna-related problems surfaced in the media. The main reason for the sluggish sales may be Chinese customers are waiting for a clear-cut fix for the new product.[Full story]
