Ten things you need to know about China's Internet

          (chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2014-02-28 17:32

          Internet poaches traditional financing

The flamboyant Yu'ebao, a fund run by Alibaba, helped currency fund Tianhong Zenglibao to become the first in China to hit 100 billion yuan ($16.30 billion) in November, disrupting the personal finance industry by sucking money from banks.

          4G comes, fast and costly

China is expected to have 30 million fourth-generation (4G) mobile network service subscribers by year-end, officials from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology predict. More than 300 Chinese cities will offer 4G telecom services this year.

The ministry issued 4G licenses to China's three major telecom operators in December.

Of the five China Mobile monthly packages, three are currently available. The cheapest costs 138 yuan, with 0.6 gigabytes of Internet usage and 500 minutes of domestic calls. The most expensive costs 338 yuan, including two gigabytes of mobile data and 2,000 minutes of calls nationwide.

          Online crime is rampant

More than 4,100 Internet-related fraud cases were solved and 150 million yuan ($24.50 million) in economic losses recovered from June to August, 2013 in a campaign by China's Ministry of Public Security.

          Advertising goes digital

China's digital advertising market will be larger than TV's this year, according to a report by Magna Global and UM China. The report also says China has the second largest search advertising market in the world behind the US, at more than $11 billion in 2014.

False or defamatory info can mean trouble

Internet users sharing false information that is defamatory or harms the national interest face up to three years in prison if posts are viewed 5,000 times or forwarded 500 times, according to guidelines issued by the Supreme People's Court and the Supreme People's Procuratorate.

No one knows what's next. Keep tracking and learning.
