The international community agrees to resolve the Darfur issue through political means, Chinese Special Representative for Darfur Liu Guijin said here Thursday, after his African tour including a visit to Sudan in June.

Liu also attended the international conference on Darfur issue held on June 25 in Paris, where he says the international community including the United States and European Union agreed to push forward the political process as the Sudanese government had accepted the hybrid peacekeeping action.

The deployment of the hybrid force is the final part of a three-phase support plan, also known as the Annan plan because it was drawn up by former UN secretary-general Kofi Annan, with aims to end armed conflicts in Darfur.

He said the political process was to persuade all political parties in Darfur who have not signed a peace pact to negotiate with the Sudanese government.

Liu said the consultation between the African Union, the United Nations and the Sudanese government as a mechanism to solve the Darfur issue has proved effective and should be continued.

China's position and policies towards Darfur have won acknowledgement and appreciation from African countries, he said.

"China's endeavors contributed a lot to the fact that Sudan accepted,without condition, the third phase of the peace plan over the Darfur issue," Liu said.

"Of course its acceptance is mainly due to the government's consideration for the long-term and fundamental interests of Sudan and the Sudanese people," he added.

Liu said China will work with other Security Council members to guarantee the hybrid peacekeeping operation and help to maintain the reconstruction and economic restoration of the Darfur region so as to achieve enduring peace in the region.
