Updated: 2008-08-21 11:58 The 29th Olympic Games, beginning in spectacular fashion on August 8th, have captivated audiences around the world. As the official Internet/Mobile platform broadcaster of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in the Chinese mainland and Macau, CCTV.com launched its Olympics Channel for extensive broadcast of the games. The AMD solution has been authorized as the “CCTV.com Designated High-Definition New Media Computing Platform for 2008”. In addition to TV, Internet and mobile phone users have the convince of watching the Olympic Games through the new media operation system, the very first official broadcasting system capable of Internet and mobile phone broadcasting in the Olympics history. At the beginning of July 2008, over 1,000 HP ProLiant servers powered by AMD Quad-Core Opteron processors were deployed by CCTV.com to create the new media operation system for the Olympics. Under the agreement reached between CCTV.com and the International Olympic Committee, CCTV.com will broadcast 12,000 hours of programs, through online live video broadcast, rebroadcast and video on demand to 250 million Internet subscribers and 550 million mobile phone users during the Beijing Olympic Games. To fulfill its broadcasting mission at the Beijing Olympics, CCTV.com decided in January 2008 to build up its new media broadcasting capability. The Olympic new media operation system is an official media platform for the Beijing Olympics. According to CCTV.com, the new media operation system has four major operating platforms: online TV, mobile phone TV, TV on public transportation, and IP TV. The video service and streaming media processing are at the core of all four platforms, which create high demand for computing platform. After a rigorous selection process and a comprehensive evaluation, CCTV.com ultimately selected HP ProLiant servers powered by AMD Quad-Core Opteron processors to build the new media operation system for the Beijing Olympic Games. CCTV International Networks Co. Ltd. is the online and media broadcasting service provider authorized by China Central Television (CCTV). The company launched CCTV.com in 1996, one of the first Chinese language information portals in China. CCTV.com has over 10 million registered users, with over 10 million independent visits per day. |
