Mainland expects new phase for cross-Strait relations

BEIJING: Top political advisor Jia Qinglin said Friday that a time of "greater communication" between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan has come and he hoped for a new period of peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.

"The cross-Strait relations are showing a good momentum of peaceful development, and a time of greater communication between the two sides has come," said Jia at a work conference on Taiwan affairs.

Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said that cross-Strait relations are currently in a key phase with many opportunities for further development, while problems and obstacles also exist.

According to a statement released Friday after the two-day meeting, Taiwan-related work for the new year will focus on building up institutionalized cross-Strait exchange, deepening political mutual trust between the Communist Party of China and the ruling Kuomintang Party, as well as between the two sides across the Strait, and continuing to oppose secessionist activities.

Other goals include expanding reciprocal investments, supporting Taiwan companies in the mainland, protecting the rights of Taiwan businesses and encouraging more Taiwan compatriots -- especially people at grass-roots levels -- to participate in the cross-Strait communication and cooperation.
