China, US to exchange views on ties in late May

BEIJING - The second round of China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED) was preliminarily set for late May, Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said here Tuesday.

Responding to relevant questions at a regular press conference, Qin said the specific dates for the dialogue were still under discussion.

"The two sides will exchange views on long-term, strategic and comprehensive issues which are related to China-US relations," Qin said, adding the dialogue served as an important platform for the two sides to exchange views on major issues and promote bilateral cooperation in major fields.

Qin said China's Vice Premier Wang Qishan and State Councilor Dai Bingguo would lead the Chinese delegation as special representatives of the Chinese head of state, and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner would represent the US head of state.

During a meeting with a group of overseas entrepreneurs in Beijing late Monday, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said the upcoming dialogue would be "very important" for China and the United States to solve problems the two countries had regarding trade and currency.

It would be "a chance for China and the United States to settle disputes and problems," Wen said.

China and the United States held their first strategic and economic dialogue in Washington last July.

On April 1, 2009, Chinese President Hu Jintao and his US counterpart Barack Obama agreed to establish the mechanism of the China-US S&ED during their first meeting in London on the sidelines of the G20 financial summit.
