BEIJING - An official with the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said on Friday that China opposes abuses of trade remedies and hopes that trade disputes with the United States can be resolved as soon as possible under the WTO dispute-settlement mechanism.

The official made the remarks regarding China's appeal on Thursday for the World Trade Organization (WTO) to set up an expert team to help settle disputes over a controversial zeroing measure imposed by Washington against Chinese frozen shrimp and diamond saw blades.

China is concerned about the disputes with the United States that have remained unresolved after negotiations and consultations between the two sides, the official said. He accused the United States of breaching world trade rules.

The legitimate rights of China's warm-water shrimp and diamond saw blades industries have been impeded by the zeroing measure and disproportionately high tariffs adopted by the United States, he said.

On December 8, 2004, the United States decided to slap anti-dumping duties of up to 112.81 percent on Chinese shrimp. It imposed further anti-dumping duties on Chinese diamond saw blades on November 4, 2009.

On February 28, 2011, China requested consultations with the United States under the dispute settlement system concerning the latter's anti-dumping measures on certain frozen warm-water shrimp from China.

On July 22, China made a similar appeal to the WTO to conduct a review of the zeroing measure used by the United States in slapping anti-dumping duties on diamond saw blades from China.

Chinese exporters brought their case to US courts, but lost a final appeal in 2010.
