Professor in sex scandal quits

A university professor has resigned from his post after being accused of having sex with an international student. He had already been removed from his teaching duties, the school confirmed on Wednesday.

Yu Wanli, former associate professor at Peking University's School of International Studies, was accused of having sex with a female student and getting her pregnant.

The university confirmed the relationship in an announcement released on Nov 22, saying that Yu had "an inappropriate sexual relationship with a female student surnamed Wang, which triggers severe social effects".

The university relieved Yu of his teaching duties and revoked his teaching credentials. Yu was also expelled from the Party, according to the announcement.

Wang claimed that her diaries and personal items had been stolen after the scandal was exposed and refused to comment on the resignation.

The affair was reported to the university's supervisory watchdog by an anonymous university alumnus in November. Previous media reports said the alumnus was Wang's friend.

In previously published interviews, Wang said she was seduced by Yu, who is married, and that she had been his mistress since July 2013.

She discovered in November that she was pregnant and claimed Yu asked her to have an abortion.

The Ministry of Education released a regulation on Oct 9 prohibiting university teachers from sexually harassing students or coercing them into having sex.

Faculty members who violate the regulation will face punishment ranging from a warning and demerit points to demotion, suspension and even prison terms.

In the announcement from Peking University in late November, it said the university values faculty members morality and behavior management. If anyone reaches the red line, the university will implement severe punishment.
