Foreign Ministry opposes so-called UN experts

The Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that China holds a "strong opposition" against a UN human rights experts' remarks about the country's law regarding the management of foreign non-governmental organizations.

Speaking at a regular news conference, foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said China strongly opposes to the remarks made by the so-called experts with the special mechanism of UN human rights council.

"Relevant remarks are full of prejudice and false accusations against China, and this is rude interference of China's legislative sovereignty and internal affairs," Hong added.

According to the Associated Press, UN human rights experts called on China to repeal a law tightening controls over foreign non-governmental organizations by subjecting them to close police supervision.

The UN experts said in a statement released in Geneva on Tuesday that they fear the law can be "wielded as tools to intimidate, and even suppress, dissenting views and opinions in the country".

"We demanded people concerned to withdraw their irresponsible remarks immediately," Hong said.

According to Hong, the aim of this law is to guarantee the legitimate rights and interests of foreign non-governmental organizations in China.

"During the deliberation of the law, China's legislative body has widely listened to opinions from home and abroad, and some reasonable suggestions have been adopted. China welcomes friends from various fields to make constructive suggestions concerning the management of non-governmental organizations. However, we strongly oppose misrepresentations and accusations that are in disregard of the fact."
