          Art beat in November

          Maurice Bejart's dancing has thrilled audiences all over the world. His company has impressed Chinese fans ever since performing Ballet for Life in Beijing in 2001. Now the Rudra Bejart Ballet School founded by Bejart in 1992 in Lausanne, Switzerland, has come to Beijing for a two-week workshop with the Beijing Dance Academy, followed by two performances at Tianqiao Theater. The young dancers will not only perform Bejart's repertoire but their own works inspired by the choreographer.

          Bridge of lore

          Art beat in November

          The Broken Bridge is a symbol of love in China, a symbolic place immortalized in the legend Madame White Snake. In the folktale, the spirit of a white snake disguised as a young lady meets her love on the bridge over Hangzhou's West Lake. Now Hangzhou Theater has adapted the idea into a contemporary musical telling the love story happening in 1940s China. The production features a script written by Tian Ding and music by Qi Feng. Directed by the renowned Wang Xiaoying, the musical The Broken Bridge has toured around China for 136 shows since its premiere in 2011 in Hangzhou.

          Rodgers and Chic

          Nile Rodgers and his band Chic will give their first performance in Asia, headlining the first Shanghai Electric Disco Carnival. The 61-year-old American musician is behind hits such as We Are Family by Sister Sledge, I'm Coming Out by Diana Ross, and Get Lucky by Daft Punk. He also produced the albums Let's Dance by David Bowie and Like A Virgin by Madonna. Rodgers and Chic will play disco classics such as Le Freak, Everybody Dance, and Good Times, and other instantly recognizable global hits.

          Goya's etchings on display

          Etching by Spanish artist Francisco Goya (1746-1828) are on display in Guangdong Museum of Art until Nov 29. Capriccio is a series of etchings that reflect Goya's observations of different social classes, from the poor to the clergy to the royals. The works are full of black humor and irony. The Disasters of War presents images of the cruelty of war, with pictures of hills of bodies and starvation having a strong visual impact and expressing the fear and desperation of war.

          Evolution of oil painting

          The Meilidao International Art Institution is presenting Colorful - Chinese Oil Painting Exhibition. The exhibition is the first cooperation between Meilidao International Art Institution and China Oil Painting Society, which reflects what the Chinese oil painters have contributed to Chinese oil painting development. The exhibition features 47 pieces from different artists, each with remarkable individual style. Through these artworks, the audience can have a peek of the development of Chinese oil painting.

          Ensemble hits

          A 90-minute show brings together the songs and dances of popular musicals including Cats, Chicago, Mamma Mia, 42nd Street and Les Miserables. The performers are all from Broadway and off-Broadway and the production has toured Spain, Norway, Britain, Sweden, Italy, Germany and Switzerland.

          Novel solo art expo

          Long Museum is presenting its first solo exhibition by a contemporary artist. Cold Mountain features paintings by Yin Zhaoyang. "Whatever subject he has explored, he has never ceased to push for new technique and expression," says Huang Jian, curator of the show. Yin has done portraits and landscapes with forceful strokes and bold colors. He has turned to traditional Chinese art for inspiration in the past few years.

          Art that's giving

          Beijing Tree Art Museum is presenting the solo exhibition of Chinese artist Nan Fang. The exhibition features not only the artist's works but also interactive games and a donation area, promoting the idea of public charity in the form of art. Nan's works range from oil paintings, Chinese ink paintings and prints to sculpture, installation and ceramics, inspired by his daily life. During the exhibition, Nan will donate 200 printed works and nine ceramic works to the Overseas Chinese Charity Foundation of China, and all funds raised during the onsite games will be used for medical assistance for women and children who are suffering from poverty in western China.

          Best of musicals

Singers such as Michael Ball, Lea Salonga, Marie Zamora, Amanda Harrison and David Harris will sing with music and chorus from Shanghai Opera House.
