GUANGZHOU - Eleven people who were allegedly involved in an incident of unrest in June in Guangdong province have been charged with obstruction of official affairs, causing a disturbance and intentional damage of property, local authorities said Thursday.

The written statement by the Public Security Comprehensive Management Committee of Guangzhou, the provincial capital, did not mention when the charges were laid.

A public security personnel engaged in the unrest, surnamed Lu, was detained for 10 days and had been dismissed from duty, according to the statement.

Officials including the secretary of Communist Party of China (CPC) Committee of Xintang town, where the unrest occurred, and the town chief, had also been removed from their posts, it said.

On June 10, a pregnant migrant woman and her husband from Sichuan province became involved in a dispute with Lu who asked the couple to move their stall, which was placed in front of a supermarket in the village of Dadun, Xintang town in the city of Zengcheng.

Irritated by the case, more than 100 migrant workers gathered in front of the supermarket later that day and the next day, some of whom hurled bottles and bricks at government officials and police vehicles. They later marched towards the nearby Dadun public security station, damaging several police vehicles and private cars with rocks on their way.

Su Zhijia, deputy secretary of CPC committee of Guangzhou city, said the incident was triggered by mounting anger among migrant workers.

Su said public services for migrant workers needed to be improved to avoid further protests.
