Drunk driving case sent to special investigative group

A joint investigation group was formed on Sunday to deal with an eight-month unresolved traffic case involving a former government official who police say was driving drunk when he hit another vehicle and severely injured a baby and hurt the baby's father and brother in Tongxu county in Kaifeng, Henan province, according a press release issued by the local public security bureau today.

Fu Xinzhong, 57, the former chief of anti-corruption bureau, allegedly drove after drinking wine and then hit three cars on the evening of June 15, 2016.

He is then said to have left the scene and hit an electric tricycle carrying a father and his two sons.The father and one son were hurt and the other son, a 1-year-old baby, suffered a severe brain injury.

Fu was released on bail pending a trial and is now in a mental hospital, police said.

The father, Liu Fengxuan, 30, said he remembers a red BMW rushing toward him and his two sons as they rode on the electric tricycle.

The police said Fu was arrested on the spot, and was found to be driving drunk as his blood alcohol content was 362.18mg/100mL, which is over the limit for legal intoxication.

The case was under investigation by the Xiangfu district public security bureau in Kaifeng.

The accused would be severely punished if violations of discipline are determined, according to the release.

"However, the case has remained unresolved for nearly eight months after it happened. My little son had two operations last year; money was urgently needed," Liu said.

He said he hoped the case would transfer to the prosecution as soon as possible.
