Chinese rapped for attacking Japan in soccer match

A Chinese daily on Thursday criticized Chinese soccer fans who booed the Japanese team and threw articles at Japanese supporters at the Asian Cup in Chongqing, saying that sports and politics should be kept apart.

Thousands of fans booed the national anthem and the team throughout all three of their Group D matches and the Japanese had to have extra security laid on for their final match against Iran on Wednesday because of crowd disturbances in their previous game.

"Sports and politics should not be confused," the China Youth Daily said in its Thursday edition, adding that although there is anti-Japanese sentiment stemming from historical problems, those who attacked Japan expressed their patriotism in a mistaken way.

Japan coach Zico on Thursday hit out at Chinese fans for booing the Japanese national anthem at the Asian Cup as the defending champions have endured a hostile reception in Chongqing throughout the tournament so far.
