'Mistress killers' come to Shanghai

China's first women's rights protection center opened its first branch in Shanghai, to help women there who are victims of family violence or think their husbands are cheating on them.

Since the center opened its first branch in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, its employees have been dubbed "mistress killers" by the media, because they help suspicious wives prove their husbands are being unfaithful.

The local branch was set up near the Shanghai Railway Station in Zhabei District. Two of its 13 "mistress killers" hail from the city, while the rest come from Chengdu.

"We hope the center can become a protector of Chinese marriages and families, and women's legal rights and interests," said its director Zhang Lanhua.

She said clients usually ask for help in collecting evidence their husbands' are having an extramarital affairs, or help in dealing with family violence and property transfers.

Since the first center was set up in Chengdu on February 17, it has dealt with more than 3,700 cases and helped save about 350 marriages.

"About 80 percent of the cases concerned extramarital affairs, which have been a major killer of marriages. Family violence was found in half of the cases," said Liu Xiaolin, the center's legal representative.

"The unfaithful husbands come from all walks of life, including the newly rich, professors, public servants and common workers."

The center negotiates the cost of each case depending on a client's financial situation and sometimes offers free help to poverty-stricken women, she said.
