UEFA to expand soccer drug testing

Updated: 2005-06-30 10:37 UEFA will start
out-of-competition drug testing for Champions League participants starting with
the 2005-06 season.
European soccer's governing body said in a statement Wednesday that players
for all 32 teams that reach the group stage of next season's competition would
be subject to the additional testing.
"We have always taken a tough stance against any form of cheating in
football, especially doping or the use of any substance that is banned," UEFA
chief executive Lars-Christer Olsson said.
"We are further tightening up our existing controls and sending out a clear
and strong deterrent message to anyone considering the use of illegal substances
to enhance their performance."
UEFA said the new legislation covers both blood and urine samples, but didn't
specify under what conditions players would be tested outside of
competition.
