With the provisional 30-man World Cup squads (and several final 23-man squads) named earlier this week, we can now assess the damage to the poor Panini World Cup sticker book. The makers of this beloved collectable are tasked with trying to determine 17 members of each team months in advance of the tournament. Obviously, this is next to impossible to get 100 percent correct given injuries and the changing whims of national team managers. After the initial release of names, 33 players in the sticker book have already missed the chance to fulfill their Panini destiny, according to Colombia's Antena 2. Some players missed out due to injury (like Belgium's Christian Benteke and the Netherlands' Kevin Strootman) and others missed because they annoy the coach (France's Samir Nasri). But so far it looks like England manager Roy Hodgson has given the Panini people the most headaches. Perhaps for the 2018 World Cup they should put a section in the back of the album that can serve as an island of misfit stickers.
