The unique features of the cross-country events uplifted the spirits of more than 10,000 spectators yesterday.

It was the third day of the eventing competition, after the first two days saw many fans admittedly bored and confused by the less-than-exciting dressage portion.

But Monday saw a change of venue, and a lot more action. Riders took to the Beas River course in Sheung Shui.

About 20 ticket holders had queued up at the shuttle bus station in Fanling by 5 am.

The first in line was a photography hobbyist surnamed Chan, from Tuen Mun. He arrived at about 4 am.

"I believe that today's events will be more exciting than the dressage," he said.

A total of 10,202 spectators entered the venue yesterday. Many came prepared with umbrellas, hats and paper fans.

"It's really fun, even though it's raining; it's not sunny, but it's fine," Korean spectator Kacy Kim said, her feet and shorts covered with mud.

A woman surnamed Au said she was excited to be able to watch the competition up close. "The horses just run right in front of me. It's amazing that we can have an exchange with the athletes and horses," she said.

Some spectators found the previous two days of equestrian competition boring, but the atmosphere changed on the third day.

They enjoyed cheering, waving national flags, taking photos and even picnicking.

Canadian rider Mike Winter found the spectators being so close to the riders encouraging.

"People cheering you all the way around keep you energetic and excited. I really appreciate the crowd coming out and taking an interest," he said. "I am just happy that Hong Kong is interested and coming out to watch."
