Xi's UN topics: development, women's issues, climate

President Xi Jinping will address issues ranging from peace to development, women's issues, and climate change when he travels to the United Nations starting Saturday.

The President will attend a series of summits to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the UN from Sept 26 to 28 at the UN Headquarters in New York, Ambassador Liu Jieyi, China's permanent representative to the UN, said on Wednesday.

Liu said President Xi will join more than 150 world leaders for multilateral meetings at the highest level, of the largest scale and with the greatest significance in recent years.

He said that "China is a founding member of the United Nations and a staunch supporter for multilateralism and the causes of the UN".

Xi's attendance at the UN summits has attracted extensive media attention.

Liu said that this year marks not only the 70th anniversary of the victories of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascism War, but also of the founding of the UN.

On his visit to the UN, Xi will expound on China's policies and propositions on peace and development, and urge all countries to continue safeguarding the international order and system with the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations at the core and to foster a new type of international relations of win-win cooperation for a better future for all, Liu said.

"These will represent China's importance contributions to the direction of world development and the UN and to the cause of human progress." Liu said.

On Saturday morning, Liu said Xi will attend the UN Summit for the Adoption of the Post-2015 Development Agenda, where he will take part in discussions on how to promote equitable, open, innovation-driven development and put forward new initiatives for greater international cooperation on achieving the post-2015 development agenda.

On Saturday afternoon, Xi will chair the High-level Roundtable on South-South Cooperation co-hosted by China and the UN. He will highlight the guiding principles and past experiences for South-South cooperation, put forward recommendations for the deepening and expansion of such cooperation in the new era and announce important steps China to take in support of international development cooperation and greater South-South Cooperation.

He will also chair the Global Leaders' Meeting on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment on Sept 27. At the meeting, Xi will elaborate on China's positions on global women's development from a new historical starting point, update the international community on China's efforts for women's causes and announce a host of measures for international assistance.

At the invitation of Ban Ki-moon, Xi will also attend a climate-change working lunch on Sept 27, where he and other leaders will discuss ways to address climate change and realize sustainable development.

At the UN General Assembly on Sept 28, Xi will focus on China's views on the current international situation and ways to foster a new type of international relations of win-win cooperation. He will also set forth China's contribution to the maintenance of world peace, promotion of common development, and greater support for the UN and multilateralism.
