          Artists inspire

          Home and style magazine AD has invited four well-established artists - namely dancer Jin Xi, pop musician Li Quan, contemporary artist Zhang Dali and Michelin star chef Bernd Siefert - to demonstrate their ideas on home and home design. The four artists will decorate different rooms of a temporary home attached to Sanlitun's orange hall, sharing their architectural talent on home design with the various "guests".

          It is part of the magazine's one-year anniversary activities, which also include an ongoing art show with works by contemporary artists and designers from Poly Culture at Sanlitun's Orange Hall.

          Jade in harmony

          Jade sculptor Li Dong, who is widely considered the master of his craft in China, is presenting his works at Beijing Reignwood Center. More than 10 pieces will be on display, mostly based on characters and gods from ancient Chinese legends. Li's jade characters have smooth lines and vivid facial expressions, meant as a physical manifestation of the Chinese philosophy to live a harmonious life.

          African art

          A grand exhibition of African wood carvings is being held at the National Museum of China. Roughly 600 works will be on display, consisting of masks, figures and daily objects, created by folk artists from more than 100 tribes in at least 10 countries from Western Africa.

          This display was made possible by Chinese art collector Xie Yanshen, who donated more than 4,000 African wood carvings to the museum from 2007-2011.

          Museum director Lu Zhang says the new exhibition will be part of the museum's regular show.

          Solo from France

          French artist Claire Tabouret is holding her first solo show at Yishu 8 Art gallery in Beijing. About 20 acrylic works will be on display, consisting of landscapes, figure paintings and self-portraits rendered with Chinese ink on rice paper.

          Under the hammer

          A preview for the 30th China Guardian Quarterly Auctions will be held from June 13-15 at Beijing International Hotel. The exhibits will go under the hammer from June 16-18 at the same venue.

          More than 2,000 Chinese ink calligraphy and paintings, nearly 2,500 porcelain and vintage wood furnishings, and some 200 Chinese oil paintings will be on display. Among the highlights are ink paintings by Qing Dynasty masters, such as Wang Hui and Hua Yan, and works by modern master painters Li Keran and Zhang Daqian. There are also 50 well-preserved Buddhist artworks, and rare porcelain works from the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties.

          7 and counting

          Seven-year-old painter Jia Jia is holding her second solo show at Rainbow Art Center in 798 Art Zone, in Beijing. More than 50 ink, oil and pastel paintings as well as pencil sketches from the Beijing-born primary school pupil will be shown. The pieces were produced over the past three years after Jia Jia's trips to Africa with her parents.

          "Traveling and painting are effective ways to nurture children's imaginations and activate their creative potential," says curator Hong Xing. Hong also believes that Jia Jia's artistic adventures will encourage more children to try their hands at painting.

          Fresh creations

          Jingfeng Arty Gallery in northeastern Beijing's 798 Art Zone will present a new exhibition featuring more than 40 works by 31 young and emerging artists. The subjects of the pieces are very diverse, varying from figures and landscapes to birds and flowers.

          "Ink art has long been regarded as a traditional genre. Now it has evolved into a vanguard art and it is gaining ground in the art market, thanks to efforts by innovative, young artists," says curator Zhang Meili.
