9 young women scientists bag awards

Nine scientists have won the 12th China Young Women in Science Fellowships Award this year.

The awardees were voted from 172 valid candidates nominated by 98 organizations and 17 experts. The jury for this year's China Young Women in Science Fellowships comprised 38 academicians.

An award ceremony was recently held in Beijing by the All China Women's Federation, the China Association for Science and Technology, the Chinese National Commission for UNESCO and L'Oreal China.

The awardees include Peng Xinhua, a professor at the School of Physical Sciences, University of Science and Technology of China, Hu Hailan from the Neuroscience Center, and Wang Linghua, Research Fellow with School of Earth and Space Sciences, Peking University.

The winners come from various disciplines — from space exploration, and leveraging the meteoric trail communications to quantum computing and decoding the neural code for emotions.

Meanwhile, in order to imbue the next generation with a scientific spirit and to encourage scientific development, a Rising Talents program was announced to encourage promising female researchers. Three young talents currently doing doctorate and post-doctorate programs were given awards.

Following the ceremony, a digital forum was held to enable real-time interaction between the winners, high school girls and netizens, to inspire more young people to take up science.
