法作家獲諾貝爾文學(xué)獎
The Nobel Prize in Literature 2014 was awarded to the French author Patrick Modiano "for the art of memory with which he has evoked the most ungraspable human destinies and uncovered the life-world of the occupation", the Swedish Academy said Thursday.
瑞典學(xué)院9日宣布，將2014年諾貝爾文學(xué)獎授予法國作家帕特里克·莫迪亞諾，以表彰他"憑借記憶的藝術(shù)，描繪了最難以捉摸的人類命運，再現(xiàn)了(德國)占領(lǐng)時期的真實生活"。

Modiano made his debut in 1968 as a writer with "La Place de L'étoile", a novel that attracted much attention. Modiano's works centre on topics such as memory, oblivion, identity and guilt. Often his tales are built on an autobiographical foundation, or on events that took place during the German occupation.
莫迪亞諾于1968年發(fā)表處女作《星形廣場》，這部小說在當(dāng)時備受關(guān)注。其作品主題主要有：回憶、遺忘、身份和罪惡。他的作品大部分都是基于親身經(jīng)歷，或是德國侵占時期的真實事件。

Modiano has published nearly 20 novels, of which the best known is probably "Rue des Boutiques Obscures" ("Missing Person"), which won the Prix Goncourt in 1978 and is about a detective who loses his memory and endeavors to find it. Together with the film director Louis Malle he made the Oscar-winning movie "Lacombe Lucien".

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang arrived in Berlin Thursday for a three-day official visit to Germany at the invitation of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Xinhua reported. He will meet German President Joachim Gauck and co-chair with Merkel the third round of China-Germany governmental consultations. Li will also deliver speeches both at the Chinese-German Forum for Economic and Technological Cooperation, and the Hamburg Summit. Germany is the first stop of Li's three-nation European tour, which will also take him to Russia and Italy.

Officials in Beijing escalated the city's air pollution alert from yellow to orange Thursday, the first orange alert for air pollution issued in the city in the second half of the year, Beijing News reported. The extremely heavy smog is expected to envelop Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province for 2 more days until it is dispersed by a cold front on Saturday night. Based on the orange alert, residents in the area are advised to minimize outdoor activities while those with respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses, as well as the elderly, are asked to stay inside their homes.

>'Putin's tiger' now in China
普京放生東北虎入中國
China is on the hunt for a Siberian tiger released into the wild by Russian President Vladimir Putin, xinhuanet.com reported, after the animal roamed across the border. Tagged with a tracking device, the tiger, named Kuzia, has been spotted in China's Taipinggou nature reserve in Heilongjiang. "A Russian expert called to tell us the location of the tiger and expressed the hope that we can protect it," nature reserve director Chen Zhigang said. The tiger should find plenty of food among the reserve's wildlife, Chen said, though officials were prepared to "release cattle" into the area to feed it.

>Oxford science grads best paid

Computer scientists from Oxford receive the most lucrative pay packets 6 months after graduating, ￡43,895 on average, according to The Sunday Times league table of graduate salaries in the UK. The figure is almost 4 times that of graduates in drama, dance and cinematics from Essex University, the lowest earners on just ￡11,963. Graduates in computer science from Imperial College London and Cambridge also feature in the top 10 for earnings. Science degrees are increasingly the path to higher earnings, the figures reveal, with engineering, medicine, veterinary science and dentistry all performing well. Arts subjects fare far less well.

Having a charging phone or tablet in your bedroom at night could do more than interrupt your sleep – it could also make you fat, researchers have warned, according to the Daily Mail of London. A team at the University of Granada in Spain discovered that the blue light emitted by the gadgets harms the production of the "sleep hormone" melatonin (褪黑激素) which helps balance of the body's metabolism (新陳代謝). Disrupting the metabolism can contribute to obesity and diabetes. Thus, experts advise banning charging gadgets when sleeping for a better sleep.

An Indian Rhesus macaque seemed in danger of falling out of the tree when it saw the alarming stock market news, foreign media reported. While perched in a tree in the Lalbagh Botanical Gardens in southern India after lunch, the little Rhesus macaque appears to be devouring the news, which he takes in with varying degrees of alarm and contemplation. The comical photographs were captured by software engineer Bhavani Gucha. Gucha said visitors to the gardens often fed the monkeys fruit wrapped in newspaper, but he had never seen a monkey have such a "funny reaction" to the news.
