Chinese companies and official groups joined together to create and donate to ZSL London Zoo a statue of Ming, a giant panda who lived in the UK from 1938 to 1944 and became a symbol of hope for the children of London during the World War II bombing blitz.
London Mayor Boris Johnson sent a letter of congratulation to China Daily ahead of an unveiling ceremony for a statue of Ming the Giant Panda at London Zoo on Oct 21.
The Giant Panda, always a key component of China's diplomatic relations with the world, is again playing a role as President Xi Jinping and his wife prepare for their state visit to the UK in late October.
Ming the Giant Panda, who brought so much joy to Londoners, during the dark days of the German bombing campaign against the British capital during WWII, spent much of her time in ZSL London Zoo from 1938 to 1944.
The first giant panda cub to come to Britain, Ming unwittingly became the spearhead of what later became known as panda diplomacy.
