A medical officer and his team brought hope to quake victims of a severely hit town in Lushan earthquake.

Yao Rong and his medical team arrived in Taiping township by helicopter at 3 pm, seven hours after the area was hit by a magnitude-7.0 earthquake on April 20.

The town was isolated from the outside as roads had been cut off by the quake. Hundreds of wounded people were waiting for help when Yao appeared.

"He went to the victims to help as soon as he came," said Zhang Huaichun, president of the Taiping Township Health Center.

The political commissar of the General Hospital of the PLA Chengdu Military Region continued working for a full day and night, attending to victims, putting up tents and contacting helicopters to transport critical patients.

After all the wounded were treated, Yao finally had time to take a nap on the cold ground with his clothes on -- he had given his bedclothes to victims.

Thirty-five wounded people were properly treated that day. Two severely injured victims were sent to more safety places via helicopter.

In order to bring as much medicine and medical equipment as possible, Yao and his team carried only one backpack for themselves.

They had only instant noodles and bottled water for the first several days. They had to sleep on the ground as the houses were torn down and the tents were occupied with victims.

"We don't care about the difficulties," Yao said with smile.

The man was used to difficulties after providing relief work for the Wenchuan earthquake, Yushu earthquake and Yiliang earthquake.

The medical team ran into a tough situation on the morning of April 21. Ran Xiaoli, a 28-year-old pregnant woman from Dahe village, was about to give birth, but the baby was in the wrong position, making a normal birth impossible.

"Our team wasn't able to deliver the baby without proper medical devices, and the road to Lushan People's Hospital was too far and too dangerous," Yao said.
