My Chengdu experience

J'ai quitté Pékin pour Chengdu en septembre 2013, poussé par l’espoir d’y trouver un cadre de vie plus agréable et par la certitude que pour conna?tre la Chine il était nécessaire de s’éloigner de la capitale. Une dizaine d’années auparavant, lors d’un premier voyage en Chine, j’avais fait une rapide étape à Chengdu et j’en avais gardé l’image d’une ville accueillante et décontractée. En pleine période du Nouvel An chinois, j’avais été frappé par l’affluence au temple Wenshu et par l’atmosphère des maisons de thé, mais mon voyage s’était poursuivi vers le Yunnan et j’avais rapidement oublié Chengdu.

En 2013, je travaillais à Pékin et je cherchais alors un moyen de quitter cette ville, fascinante à bien des égards, mais bien trop vaste pour moi. Sur les conseils d’un ami je postulais pour un travail à l’agence Campus France de Chengdu, encouragé dans ce choix par des amis ayant fait leurs études à Chengdu et ne tarissant pas d’éloges sur le Sichuan. De plus, étant très attiré par la culture tibétaine et par les possibilités de faire de la randonnée en montagne, Chengdu m’apparaissait comme une possibilité intéressante. Je revenais donc à Chengdu plus de dix ans après ma première visite. La ville avait changé au-delà de ce que j’avais imaginé. Passé la période d’adaptation nécessaire à la cuisine locale, je me suis rapidement senti chez moi à Chengdu, en raison du caractère accueillant des Sichuanais.

Vivre à Chengdu dans les années 2010 est une chance pour quiconque souhaite observer les transformations à l’?uvre dans la Chine actuelle. Portée par une croissance forte, profitant de la politique ? Go West ? décidée par le gouvernement central, la province du Sichuantraverse un développement économique et culturel sans précédent, qui se traduit notamment par une ouverture plus grande sur l’étranger. Au niveau consulaire, cela est visible par l’ouverture récente de nombreux consulats à Chengdu : Israel, Pologne, Nouvelle-Zélande…

Le Consulat général de France à Chengdu a été inauguré en 2006 et son activité a rapidement cr?, au point de compter désormais près de 40 personnes et d’être devenu le 3ème poste consulaire fran?ais en Chine, après Shanghai et Canton, et l’un des premiers au monde en termes de délivrance de visas (plus de 100 000 visas délivrés en 2015). L’activité de la France dans le Sud-Ouest de la Chine est aussi visible dans les domaines de la coopération universitaire, du nombre sans cesse plus important de jeunes chinois de la région partant étudier en France, ou encore dans le dynamisme des évènements culturels organisés par notre consulat, qui contribuent au rapprochement entre notre pays et la province du Sichuan.

J’occupe depuis 4 mois les fonctions d’attaché de presse au Consulat général de France, et je me sens particulièrement privilégié car ce métier m’offre la possibilité de suivre de près l’actualité de Chengdu et de faire connaissance avec de nombreuses personnalités locales et étrangères travaillant dans des domaines très différents. Chengdu est une ville débordante d’énergie et je compte bien y rester quelques années de plus pour continuer à me familiariser avec la province du Sichuan.?

Translation:

I left Beijing for Chengdu in September 2013, hoping to find a more agreeable way of living. And I was sure that it was necessary to stay away from the capital in order to fully understand and experience China. When I first visited China a dozen years ago, I had a short stay in Chengdu. The city gave me an impression of hospitality and leisure. It was the Chinese Lunar New Year then and I was impressed by the crowds in Wenshu Monastery and by the atmosphere in the teahouses. However, with my journey continuing toward Yunnan province, I quickly moved on from Chengdu.

In 2013, I was working in Beijing but was looking for a chance to leave the city – it was fascinating in many respects but too big for me. At the suggestion of a friend, I applied for a job at the Chengdu agency of Campus France. My choice was encouraged by many friends who had studied in Chengdu and highly recommended Sichuan.

In addition, since I am very fond of Tibetan culture and hiking, Chengdu seemed to be an interesting possibility. Therefore, I set foot in Chengdu again after more than 10 years. The city had changed far beyond my imagination. After spending sometime adapting to the local cuisine, I soon felt at home in Chengdu, thanks to hospitality of the Sichuan people.

Living in Chengdu in the 2010s is a chance for everyone who wants to observe the changes taking place in China today. Profiting from the Go West Strategy decided by the central government and the consequent strong supports, Sichuan has experienced an unprecedented economic and cultural development, which has been reflected notably in the increasing degree of opening up to the outside world. In the respect of consular services, more and more countries have opened consulates in Chengdu: Israel, Poland, New Zealand, etc.

The General Consulate of France in Chengdu was established in 2006 and its business has grown fast. It now has about 40 staff and is the third largest French consulate in China, following Shanghai and Guangzhou. It has issued more than 100,000 French visas in 2015, one of the most among the French consulates all around the world. France and Southwest China have also enhanced cooperation in education. A large number of Chinese students further their studies in France. Our consulate also organizes colorful cultural exchange activities, which contribute to the friendly relations between France and Sichuan province.

I have been the press officer at the General Consulate of France in Chengdu for four months. I am honored because this job offers me the opportunity to keep track of Chengdu's development and get to know local friends or expats working in various fields. Chengdu is a vibrant city. I plan to stay here for some years to better familiarize myself with Sichuan.
