Frozen yoghurt, hot hearts

Two of Chengdu’s famous frozen yoghurt shops at Joy City and Silverstone Square are owned by Chinese-born Lulu and her husband Pit from Germany. 　

After first meeting in Germany, the couple has now been together for 11 years, much of which has been spent in the Sichuan capital of Chengdu in Southwest China.

“I can still remember she was wearing pink glasses and carrying an orange backpack and I thought this girl must be very interesting,” recalled Pit with a smile in his eyes.

Lulu said that Pit was a very bright boy and had offered to be her tour guide when she asked him for directions. He showed her around Germany and explained the history, culture and customs as they arrived at different places.

After days of travelling together, they fell in love. However, the fairytale trip soon came to an end and Lulu had to return to China. After days of mental anguish, Pit decided to travel to China to be with Lulu, since she was not willing to leave her parents behind.

“When he showed up outside my door, I knew this man was the oneI was looking for,” said Lulu while holding up Pit’s arm.

After getting married, the couple decided to open a shop to sell German frozen yoghurt. When business was going well, they decided to open another one the following year.

The couple cooperates with the business very well. Lulu is responsible for the parts related to the Chinese government and clients and Pit is in charge of ordering goods from Germany.

When asked about his life in China, Pit said that he never felt regret for coming to China and has accustomed to life in Chengdu. “The people are very friendly and I love Sichuan food,” said Pit.

The couple also shared their methods of keeping their love fresh. “She always gives me romantic surprises. Once she called all my friends together and threw a party for me without letting me know,” said Pit.

Pit shows his love in a more subtle way than Lulu. He may get up early in the morning and make a big breakfast for her or buy her chocolates with a note in Chinese to wish her a good day.

One thing they agree is most important in their relationship is to trust and respect each other’s cultural background.
