After the Sept 11 terrorist attack in 2001, as the world's security inspections tightened, attention shifted to the industry and opportunities to develop products in the field opened up.
Nuctech, a leading supplier of security inspection solutions, grasped these opportunities and made great strides in its business development.
The company's products have been sold to more than 130 countries and regions and are widely used in civil aviation, customs and urban subway and railway systems, according to Li Zhijun, vice president of Nuctech.
More than 75 percent of European countries have purchased Nuctech's products and the company accounts for 80 percent of the African market and 50 percent of the Latin American market, said Li.
Entrepreneur Wu Xiduo will always be grateful for the help his company got from 36 Kr, which provides startups with free office space, Wi-Fi and electricity for three months.
"Thanks to 36 Kr, we received angel investments and became more attractive to job seekers," said the 24-year-old with a smile.
36 Kr is one of the innovation service organizations based in Zhongguancun Innovation Street, which opened on June 12.
The street is in the western area of Zhongguancun, in Haidian district of Beijing.
Zhongguancun was the "top choice" for Oracle, the US-based computer technology company, to set up its largest international development center in China, said Frank Xiong, vice-president of Oracle Group and general manager of the China Develop Center.
Zhongguancun Science Park is known as Beijing's technology hub and the country's "Silicon Valley". It was established in 1988, initially as an experimental area for locally developed new technologies. Today it is home to a group of world-renowned IT giants, both multinational and domestic.
"After over two decades of development, Zhongguancun has become very appealing," said Xiong.
Area plans to protect IP rights, accelerate tech transfer and create a complete business chain
The Zhongguancun Haidian Science Park will strengthen its role as an incubator for world innovation by managing Zhongguancun innovation street with "global vision, international standards and Chinese characteristics", said the park's administrative committee officials.
The street, in Zhongguancun's western area, was once home to shops selling books and clothes. A 100-million-yuan ($16 million) transformation project has turned it into a hub for startups and entrepreneurs.
Zhongguancun Haidian Science and Technology Park in Beijing is a top recommendation for people looking to start an innovation business in the capital.
It was the first State-level high-tech zone in China and is still at the very top in the nation, but Haidian Science Park is not resting on its laurels. It has a new plan in place to further consolidate its leading position.
Urbanization is often a hard change for farmers because they have to leave the land, places that their families might have lived for centuries.
But the process is definitely a benefit to farmers in Dongsheng, a township in the north of Beijing's Haidian district, according to Chen Bin, deputy general manager of Beijing Dongsheng Bozhan Investment and Management Co, the company responsible for the development and operation of the area.
The township that was before a traditional agricultural area has grown into the Zhongguancun Dongsheng Science and Technology Park, a part of the renowned Zhongguancun Science Park.
Even though it is now one of the innovative high-tech zones in Beijing, Chen said local farmers still firmly hold the rights to their land and their returns are increasing year by year.
Change in business mix and push for innovation
At the beginning of the year, authorities at Haidian Science Park redoubled their efforts to turn the top science park in China into one of the world's leading high-tech innovation hubs.
Officials at the administrative committee of the park said they will continue to highlight protecting intellectual property rights this year to enhance the park's core competitiveness.
They said their tasks will include improving the standards of IP management among local companies while setting up a patent information database and coordinating with other regions and organizations for IP-related law enforcement.
The park in Beijing's Haidian district is projected to have more than 5,000 nationally competitive high-tech enterprises by the end of the year.
When Jiang Chengyu was born in 1987, a "printer" referred to a machine for reproducing documents -often at a mind-numbingly slow pace.
Few could have imagined that, only a few decades later, a new generation of printers would be used to create not documents but teeth.
Jiang's improved 3D printer, capable of producing prosthetic teeth, is one of the many ideas that got its start at Zhongguancun's Dream Lab.
"Here we encourage people to fully use their imagination. We provide support to turn their ideas into reality," said Liu Jinjun, general manager of the Dream Lab's administrative entity Beijing Zhonghai Investment Management Co.
Industrial alliances, new financing models help enterprises to thrive.
A national innovation demonstration zone, Haidian Science Park in Beijing has been China's leading incubator of high-tech industries since it was founded in 1988.
Currently, the Haidian district hosts about 4,400 national-level high-tech enterprises, which account for one-tenth of the country's total.
And more than 70 percent of the leading enterprises of China's seven strategic emerging sectors base their operations here.
Online advertising company IZP Technologies Co is like a missionary, but instead of bringing religious beliefs overseas, it is promoting high-quality Chinese goods.
Promoting innovation requires innovative policies, say leaders of the Haidian Science Park, the birthplace of China's most advanced technology.
Meng Jingwei, deputy director of Haidian district in Beijing, said that innovation is crucial to maintaining economic competitiveness during a time of technological revolutions at home and abroad.
As the core of the Zhongguancun Innovation Demonstration Zone, Haidian Science Park is taking the lead in this transformation by attracting enterprises through its vibrant market, talented people and favorable policies, he said.
A total of 16,000 innovation-driven companies are headquartered in the park, including big names like Lenovo, Digital China, Founder, Baidu, Sohu and Sina.
The park is also home to many leading State-owned enterprises, such as the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation and China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation.
