The chairman of the China Islamic Association, Chen Guangyuan, says the original meaning of the word "Islam" is peace. And he added that peace should be obtained everywhere from daily life to religious rituals.
Chen Guangyuan made the remarks Saturday when talking to Muslims in Beijing. He said Islam is a religion of peace and Muslims should bring peace to others. His remarks were echoed by many Muslims, who said they hoped for a united and stable society.
