Afghanistan tries to revive Silk Road: Afghan president

KABUL - Afghanistan is trying to revive the ancient Silk Road and "turn Afghanistan to a regional hub for connecting Central Asia to South Asia," said Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Friday.

Ghani told the sixth Regional Economic Cooperation Conference on Afghanistan (RECCA) which resumed its meeting in Afghan capital of Kabul on Friday that today's Silk Road is full of entrepreneurial and commercial innovation's potential.

"We have invested billions of dollars in our roads development, " he added.

"The Silk Road was a sophisticated financial system, dispute resolution system with nodal cities," said Ghani.

"Afghanistan could be the economic hub in the heart of Asia, we are looking at the emerging as Asian continental economy," Ghani said.

The Afghan leader also stressed for regional cooperation and common fight against the terrorism. "A peaceful, prosperous and stable Afghanistan would benefit the region and the world at large, " he said.

Delegates from more than 30 countries from the region and beyond and some 40 regional and international agencies including World Bank and the Asian Development Bank attended the conference which opened on Thursday at the country's foreign ministry building.

In the two-day meeting, issues relating to economic cooperation in the region, trade, business and the role of private sector in boosting economic activities in the region would be discussed.

The participants will issue a declaration at the end of the meeting later on Friday to stress the enhancement of trade and economic cooperation among the countries in the region.
