Hague tribunal head hopes Karadzic caught this year

The chief UN war crimes prosecutor said on Thursday that she hoped the two most wanted suspected war crimes fugitives would be behind bars this year.

Carla del Ponte wants Bosnian Serb wartime leader Radovan Karadzic and commander Ratko Mladic to answer charges for atrocities committed in the 1992-95 Bosnian war.

"We hope it will be done before the end of the year," she told a news conference.

Del Ponte was speaking after returning from a trip to the Balkans to try to persuade leaders in Belgrade and Sarajevo to bring suspected war criminals to justice.

She came to Sweden to receive an award for her contribution to human rights in Europe.
