The China Red Cross Society (CRCS) had received 680 million yuan (US$81.92 million) in donations to fight severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) by July 9.

About 557 million yuan was collected by red cross branches across the country.

CRCS vice-president Wang Lizhong thanked the donors and promised the donations would be dispensed as soon as possible.

Wang also welcomed monitoring of the CRCS by people from all walks of society, especially the donors and media.
