          Communist Youth League congress opens

          The 15th National Congress of the Communist Youth League of China (CYLC), a peripheral organization of the Chinese Communist Party, opened Tuesday at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

          Revisions to the League constitution topped the agenda at the five-day meeting; A new leadership will also be elected.

          The theme of the congress is to raise high the banner of Deng Xiaoping Theory, fully implement the Three Represents Thought and the spirit of the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and unite and lead Chinese youth in building a relatively affluent society.

          Hu Jintao, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central committee, attended the opening ceremony of the congress, along with other Communist Party and state leaders Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Zeng Qinghong, Huang Ju, Wu Guanzheng, Li Changchun and Luo Gan.

          Wu Guanzheng delivered a congratulatory speech at the opening ceremony on behalf of the CPC central committee.

          A total of 1,539 representatives from across the country participated in the meeting.

          Zhou Qiang, first secretary of the Secretariat of the CYLC central committee, made a work report to the congress on behalf ofthe 14th CYLC central committee.

          Founded in 1922, the CYLC, with a present membership of 69.86 million, is the world's largest youth organization. It holds a national congress every five years.

          The 15th congress will close on Saturday.
