Ambush kills one US soldier, wounds two in Iraq
          ( 2003-07-31 16:31) (Agencies)

One US soldier was killed and two wounded in a gun attack on their tactical operations center northeast of Baghdad, the US army said on Thursday.

A US soldier holds his 9mm pistol as he rests after one of the numerous protests in Baghdad,July 30. As three months since the official end of the war on the regime of Iraq comes, coalition soldiers begin to tire of dealing with the frustrations of local Iraqis who expect a speedy resolution to the many problems plaguing the newly emerging regime.[AP]
A military spokesman said the soldiers from the 4th Infantry Division were attacked around 11:45 pm on Wednesday. The death brings to 51 the number of US soldiers killed in attacks since Washington declared major combat over on May 1. In the last two weeks alone, 18 have been killed.

The spokesman said the incident happened around 40 km (25 miles) east of Baquba, a restive town in the "Sunni triangle" area where many of the attacks on US troops have been concentrated. On Saturday three soldiers were killed in a grenade attack at a hospital in Baquba.

Washington blames die-hard Saddam Hussein loyalists for the spate of attacks.

On Tuesday, an Arab television network broadcast an audio tape which the CIA says was probably recorded by Saddam. The taped message mourned the death of his sons Uday and Qusay and vowed to fight a holy war to drive US forces out of Iraq.
