The hot, dry conditions plaguing much of China are set to continue, despite the temporary relief offered by tropical storm Morakot.

The Central Meteorological Observatory has forecast high temperatures of between 35 to 38 C today in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, Southwest China's Guizhou Province, and eastern parts of Southwest China's Sichuan Province.

Most parts of North China can expect temperatures as high as 35 or 36 C and in Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, the mercury could rise to between 39 and 41 C, according to the forecast.

East China's Zhejiang Province has become one of the hottest places in the country after consecutive days of record high temperatures, Xinhua News Agency reported yesterday.

Of the 67 meteorological stations in the province, 40 have registered their hottest days ever, Xinhua quoted Meng Zhong, director of the provincial meteorological centre, as saying.

Four stations recorded temperatures over 40 C for 10 consecutive days, he said.
