Two separate landslides killed at least five people and left 10 missing in Southwest China's Sichuan Province on Saturday.

One person was confirmed dead and another 10 people missing after a massive landslide occurred on Saturday morning in Xiazhuang Village in Wenchuan County of the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, in the northwest of the province.

Local officials said the landslide was triggered by heavy rain that had hit the province in previous days.

Officials with a provincial disaster relief group headed by Tang Jianjun, vice-secretary-general of the Sichuan provincial government, said 60 families in the village were affected and five houses were destroyed.

The landslide also destroyed nearly five hectares of farmland, three kilometres of power transmission line and a 50-metre section of a national highway.

An official with the Civil Affairs Bureau of the Aba Prefecture said the disaster took place at 7:30 am in a mountainous area with poor telecommunications.

The provincial government dispatched rescue teams to the area.

Also on Saturday, another landslide killed four people in central Sichuan's Mianyang city's Jiuzhaigou scenic site.

The landslide occurred in the small hours of Saturday and buried four cars, in addition to killing four people and injuring others.
