Typhoon Krovanh leaves southern island city submerged
          ( 2003-08-25 16:24) (Xinhua)

The typhoon Krovanh, the 12th in scale which hit the southern island province of Hainan at 9 p.m. Sunday night, has left this provincial capital partly power cut and a city of "Venice."

Rainstorms slashed the buildings of the city all night, with high-speed winds whistling through. Some residential neighborhoods were covered in darkness because powerful winds cut off electricity supply in some areas.

Monday morning very few citizens took to streets and police and emergency workers were maintaining order and clean streets on which many trees including windbreak-capable coconut palms were left uprooted.

A lot of sections of city streets were inundated in knee-deep waters in which flameouted cars remained helpless.

Workers of power and telecom companies were in hurry to repair damaged power and communications facilities.

As of 12 at noon on Monday, the city was still in a blurry world with storms and heavy rains continuing.

According to the Meteorological Station of Hainan Province, the typhoon landed at 4 p.m. Monday morning and brought the northern part of the province under torrential rains.
