            Professor makes remarkable contributions
             
           
           

          Dong Suocheng, a leading professor and supervisor of doctorate candidates at the Knowledge Innovation Base of the Institute of Geographical Science and Natural Resources Research under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), has contributed much in his research domain.
          Dong primarily does research in regional ecological economics, resource economics, environmental economics and sustainable development. Now he is engaged in research in ecological and eco-economic strategies for western development, interactive mechanisms between urbanization and their ecological enviroments in west China's cities, principle factors of China's economic growth and environmental pollution.
          He has chaired and accomplished around 30 key research projects at both national and international level, including Southeast and South China Regional Planning. He has published 130 papers.
          His  "A Study of the Strategy on Resources and Environment of Eastern Coastal China in the 21st Century" project won the State Environmental Protection Bureau third prize in 1997. His  "Comprehensive Study of the Industrial Zone along the Yangtze River" won CAS second prize in 1998.
          Dong's book  "A Study of the Strategy of Developing Western China in the 21st Century" won the State Award in 2002.
          This year, Dong was invited to give a lecture at the Sub-Global Scenarios Workshop on Millennium Ecosystem Assessment held in Malaysia.
          In 2002 he served as the executive deputy chairman at an international conference on China's economy and investment opportunities after China's entry into the World Trade Organization, which was held in the Unites States.
          Meanwhile, he was invited to give lectures at several universities of the United States, and the University of British Columbia in Canada.
