Escaped zoo tiger brought under control
          ( 2003-09-21 16:17) (Xinhua)

A tiger, which escaped on Saturday from a tiger park on the Changbai Mountain in northeast China's Jilin Province, has been found and is being besieged by police.

Police sources said that the tiger was found and surrounded inside a forest near the tiger park at 11 a.m. Sunday. Police are waiting for directions from relevant department before taking further steps.

A park worker said the tiger jumped over the park's four-meter- high bars at about 3:00 p.m. Saturday with the assistance of a pine tree. The tiger bit Jiang Fengbo, 22, a worker from Changbaishan City, who was plucking pine nuts outside the park, and escaped.

Dozens of policemen were mobilized to track down the tiger. They found the tiger in a nearby forest, shot at and hurt the tiger. But the tiger managed to escape and was at large before it was found and besieged Sunday morning.

Jiang, the injured, suffered hurts to his trachea and parenchyma of thigh, and fractures to his cervical vertebra during the tiger attack.

A doctor with the No. 2 People's Hospital of Antu County, where Jiang is being treated, said that Jiang was in stable condition and now he can speak. But, the doctor said further observations are needed to see where Jiang is completely out of danger.

Established in July of 2002 with the approval of local forestry bureau, the Siberian Tigers Park on the Changhai Mountain now is home to 12 adult tigers and four tiger cubs.

This was the second time that tigers in the park attacked and hurt human beings since it went into operation more than one year ago.

On November 18 last year, Liu Jinling, a worker with the park, entered the park in violation of safety stipulations, was killed by a tiger. Relatives of Liu were paid about 100,000 yuan (US$12,000) in compensation.
