          Road accidents kill 41
          ( 2003-10-03 10:19) (Xinhua)

Forty-one people were killed and 53 injured in road accidents in China on Oct. 1, the first day of the country's week-long National Day Holiday.

The figures come from the traffic control department under the Ministry of Public Security (MPS).

At 10:24 a.m. on Wednesday, a car rolled into a roadside stream in Luzhai County of southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, leaving four dead and one injured. At 1:55 p.m. the same day, a car collided with a farm truck in Guilin City of Guangxi, causing five deaths and three injuries. Later an accident involving three cars at 5:10 p.m. in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region resulted in five deaths and six injuries.

South China's Guangdong Province reported a total of 26 traffic accidents with 27 dead and 43 injured.

As a golden opportunity for tourism, the holiday has seen a soaring vehicle volume in and out of the country's major scenic spots.

By noon of Thursday, some 12,000 vehicles had been to Beijing tourist sites, and the number of tourists approached 250,000.

Officials with the traffic control department of MPS reminded travelers to pay more attention to road safety as the number of vehicles had increased dramatically in the holiday.
