Yu Zaiqing elected chairman of Int'l Wushu Federation

Yu Zaiqing, a senior Chinese sports official, was elected chairman of the
International Wushu Federation (IWF) at an IWF's election session held in Macao,
China on Monday.
Yu is deputy director of the State Sports General Administration of China and
a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
In an exclusive interview with Xinhua, the newly elected chairman said that
the priority work of IWF's new assembly in its term for the next four years will
be to bring Wushu into the Olympic program.
Meanwhile, the IWF that has 97 member countries and regions across all of the
five Continents will continue to promote the sport in the international arena,
develop the sport and explore its market value to find more funding support,
added Yu.
Yu said that Wushu's entry into the Olympic Games would be an arduous work,
since the IOC is considering cutting the scale of the Games. However, IWF will
strive to do its utmost to promote the internationally famous sport into the
Olympics, the world's highest sports arena.
Yu's predecessor Li Zhijian wrote a formal letter in 2001 to IOC president
Jacques Rogge to apply for Wushu's entry into the Olympic Games.
