China to strengthen traffic supervision over 29 sections
          ( 2004-01-01 10:54) (Xinhua)

China's Ministry of Public Security (MPS) and the State Administration of Production Safety ( SAPS) on Wednesday urged local governments and related departments to strengthen traffic control over 29 dangerous road sections.

The 29 road sections, involving 29 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities including Beijing, Shanghai, Hebei, Jiangsu and Inner Mongolia, have all witnessed a series of accidents or one severe accident with a death toll above 10 people.

Officials with MPS said some of the dangerous road sections were located in mountainous areas with steep slopes, sharp turns or narrow road surfaces. Some were affected by rainy and foggy weather. In addition to the supervision over traffic control at these sections, MPS and SAPS also reminded drivers to obey traffic rules.

China has enhanced management of traffic security in recent years. On Oct. 28 this year, the country's first traffic safety law was passed at a six-day meeting of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC), the country's top legislature.

The law will go into effect on May 1, 2004.
