New bird flu case suspected in Guangdong
          (China Daily)
          Updated: 2004-02-13 00:27

A suspected case of the killer H5NI bird flu strain was reported in Guangdong Province's Shaoguan yesterday, according to the Ministry of Agriculture spokesman, Jia Youling, for bird flu control. It is the first reported case in the city of 3.1 million people, which is in the nation's south.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health yesterday issued an emergency document asking diseases control centres, especially those in epidemic areas, to strengthen the surveillance of possible human-to-human transmissions.

From today, diseases control centres in badly hit regions will start compiling information about people who have picked up heavy flu and pneumonia without clear reasons, reporting daily to the Ministry of Health.

No human-to-human transmissions have been found in China.

In Bangkok, Chinese Ambassador Yan Ting'ai, on behalf the Chinese Government, passed on a 4-million-baht (US$100,000) donation to the Thai Foreign Minister, Surakiat Sathirathai, to help the kingdom bring its bird flu problem under control.

China has so far provided donations to Viet Nam, Indonesia, Cambodia and Thailand, in an attempt to stamp out the disease.
