More than 250 delegates from the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) economies will attend the 29th APEC Telecommunication and Information Working Group Meeting (APEC TEL 29) in Hong Kong from March 21 to 26 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center.

Hong Kong's Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology, John Tsang, will officiate at the opening of the meeting on March 24.

A spokesman for the Office of the Telecommunications Authority said on Friday that APEC TEL was one of the most important telecommunications events in the Asia Pacific region.

"We are pleased to host APEC TEL for the second time since 1994. APEC TEL is widely recognized as an invaluable platform for governments, industries, academics and interested groups to exchange views, nurture ideas and foster co-operation for the advancement of information and communication technology (ICT) in the region," said the spokesman.

"Plenary sessions, workshops and steering group meetings will be held during the week. The Regulatory Roundtable, the highlight of APEC TEL 29, has already attracted more than 100 regulatory officials and senior executives. The Roundtable will encourage stronger dialogue between the regulatory officials and the private sector on the important subject of Next Generation Networks," the spokesman said.

The APEC TEL Working Group was formed in 1990. It is committed to improving the telecommunications and information infrastructure in the region and to facilitating effective co-operation, free trade and investment and sustainable development.

Four steering groups on liberalization, business facilitation, development co-operation, and human resources development, were established to propose, implement and monitor projects and activities to advance the overall goals of APEC. The Working Group Meeting is held twice a year.
