China vows to raise moral standards of young people

China says it faces serious challenges in raising the ideological and moral standards of its 367 million people under 18 years old, such as the negative effects of dishonesty, cheating, superstition, evil cults, pornography, drug addiction, money worship and corruption in the world of some grown-ups.

The Chinese Communist Party Central Committee and the State Council issued a package of proposals Monday on improving the ideological and moral standards of young people, saying that great changes at home and abroad have broadened the all-round development of young people, and new thoughts and ideas in line with social progress are enriching the minds of the young people.

Yet those negative influences arising from the changes should not be ignored, according to the lengthy document.

The fast expansion of the Internet and other new media created new channels for young people in learning and entertainment, while harmful information is also spreading fast and corrupting the souls of some young people, it says.

Under the influences of various negative factors, a small number of young people had empty minds and their behaviors were out of tune, and some even committed crimes.

The document says that the ideology and morality of the young people in China has direct bearing on the quality of the Chinese nation as a whole and the prospects of the country and the destiny of the Chinese nation.

The majority of the young people in contemporary China love the motherland, strive for progress, treasure unity and friendship, civilized behavior and politeness, it says.

The document acknowledges that there is room for improvement inthe work of both governments and the society.

Some leading officials in some regions and departments have insufficient understanding of the work of raising ideological and moral standards of young people, according to the document.

They failed to attach sufficient importance and shoulder their responsibility as leaders, it says.

An environment in which the whole society stresses and supports the work of raising the ideological and moral standards of young people has not yet be formed and there exists various social factors that are not favorable for the healthy development of young people, according to the document.

The phenomenon still exists that excessive attention has been paid to intellectual development and insufficient attention to ethical education, and much work should be done to improve the professional ethics of teachers, the document says.

The document says the increased mobility of the population resulted in relaxation of education of children in some families while some parents have wrong concepts and methods in educating their children.

The proposals call for better understanding the importance and urgency of the issue in a bid to blaze new trail in improving the ideological and moral standards of young people.
