Indian Tata, China Unicom sign CDMA memo
          (Agencies)
          Updated: 2004-05-21 10:12

Basic telephony services provider in India, Tata Teleservices and China Unicom have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for co-operation in the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) space.

This marks one of the first alliances between the two neighboring countries in this space. Last month, China's mobile handset maker, Kejian entered the Indian marked lured by the booming cellular market.

According to a media statement released by the company, the understanding between Tata Teleservices and China Unicom to jointly develop applications on the CDMA platform aims at offering more and more value added services to the subscribers of both the telecom operators.

The agreement would immediately translate into Tata Teleservices and China Unicom offering International-roaming services to their subscribers on each other's CDMA network.

Tala Teleservice, the telecom arm of Indian business conglomerate Tata & Sons, is one of the two CDMA mobile service providers in the country, along with its arch rival Reliance Infocomm.
