Judge to try Saddam resigns on security reasons

Judge Naeem al-Igaily, head of the special tribunal to try former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, submitted his resignation hours after the announcement of his appointment, Al-Sabah Al-Jadid newspaper reported Monday.

He submitted his resignation for the lack of protection and because he opposed announcing the appointment publicly, which would endanger his life, the paper quoted a source close to the judge as saying.

Iraqi Defense Minister Hazim Shaalan announced Sunday that the trial of Saddam would be concluded before the January elections, and emphasized that Saddam would be executed for invading two countries and killing his own people.

The former Iraqi president appeared for the first time at a court on July 1, and three days later he was transferred into the custody of the interim Iraqi government.

The appearance has stirred many arguments about the legitimacy of the tribunal.
