Al Ain run over by Motors in AFC Champions League

Korean league side Chonbuk Motors sent holders Al Ain crashing out of the AFC Champions League on Tuesday, handing the United Arab Emirates side a 4-1 trouncing in their quarter-final second leg tie at the Jeonju World Cup Stadium.

Holding a 1-0 advantage from the first leg in Al Ain, Chonbuk powered to a decisive victory thanks to second-half goals by Nam Kung-do, Paulo Rink, Andre Gomes and a Park Dong-hyuk penalty.

Al Ain’s only response came from a well-taken strike by Rami Yaslam as the UAE outfit meekly bowed out 5-1 on aggregate.

All of the scoring came after the break following a dreadful first half marred by misplaced passes and wasted opportunities as both sides struggled to find their rhythm on the slick playing surface.

Chonbuk’s best opportunity of the half fell to Lim You-hwan, who headed Yoon Jong-hwan’s corner kick over the crossbar, while Al Ain’s Senegalese striker Boubacar Sanogo beat Chonbuk goalkeeper Lee Yong-bal and defender Park Dong-hyuk to a lofted ball just before the break but placed his header just wide of the target.

The game improved in the second half and Chonbuk extended their aggregate lead thanks to a somewhat fortuitous opening goal in the 53rd minute. Kim Kyang-ryang sent a splendid pass into the box towards an unmarked Nam Kung-do, and although the lanky striker failed to make contact with his outstretched right leg as he slid in, the ball deflected off his left knee into the Al Ain net.

Needing two goals to avert an early elimination, Al Ain pressed forward with long range efforts by Molino Alejandro and Roberto Acuna forcing Lee Yong-bal into his first saves of the game.

However, Chonbuk effectively killed off the tie in the 69th minute when Yoon Jong-hwan centred for former Germany international Paulo Rink to fire a precise left-footed drive past goalkeeper Ali Rashed and into the bottom corner of the net.

Subait Khater went close for Al Ain with an angled long range drive that sailed just wide of the far post but the UAE side finally pulled a goal back with two minutes remaining as a cross was whipped in from the right for substitute Rami Yaslam to hammer the ball home from six yards out.

That was not to be the end of the scoring though as Chonbuk added some gloss to the scoreline and piled on the misery for Al Ain with a pair of injury time goals.

Brazilian midfielder Andre Gomes made it 3-1 with a fierce shot from 20 metres that Ali Rashed got a hand to but was unable to keep out, and Park Dong-hyuk sealed the victory by stroking home a spot kick after Chung Jong-kwan had been brought down in the box by Ali Rashed.

While Al Ain and new coach Alain Perrin will wonder what might have been, Chonbuk can now prepare for an AFC Champions League semi-final meeting against Al Ittihad of Saudi Arabia next month.
