          Changchun film festival launched

Capital of Northeast China's Jilin Province is hosting a grand gathering of Chinese film circles.

The three-day Changchun China Film Festival opened yesterday to commemorate the 100th birthday of Chinese movies.

"Awarding primarily Chinese feature films, the festival is like a national film festival -- just like the Huabiao Award and Golden Rooster Award," said An Li, vice-director of the festival's organizing committee and vice-mayor of Changchun.

To date, 176 movies have confirmed they will participate, twice that of the last festival. Eighty-seven films from the Chinese mainland, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Taiwan Province have been selected to compete for eight final awards.

Film fans, especially those from Changchun, will not only have a good opportunity to watch many movies, but also get a rare chance to see their beloved actors and actresses.

Forums focusing on 100 years' development of Chinese films and the Changchun Film Studio's future will also be held.

Film is one of the outcomes of progress in science and technology, whilst Chinese films are the crystallization of a blend and collision between Chinese and Western cultures. The first Changchun China Film Festival was held in 1992.

"Time to Love", directed by Huo Jianqi and starring Chinese actors Lu Yi and Zhao Wei, was screened at the opening ceremony.
