China, US work to forge balanced trade
          (Xinhua)
          Updated: 2005-03-21 13:52

China, in the principle of maintaining a general trade balance, attaches importance to US trade deficit with China, said Chinese Vice-Premier Wu Yi in Beijing on Monday at a meeting with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

It's the complementarity rather than competition and the different statistic modes of the Chinese and US economies that forged the relatively large trade deficit of the US side, Wu said.

"Even though, we will make joint efforts with the United States, including to promote US exports of hi-tech products and technology to China, to reach a generally balanced trade between the two countries," Wu noted.

Wu said Sino-US economic and trade cooperation constitutes an important basis and a strong driving force for the steady growth of bilateral relations and conforms with the common interests of both sides.

The two sides should treasure the hard-won result of bilateral economic and trade cooperation and properly handle their disputes with a long-term perspective and in the principle of equality, reciprocity and development so as to push bilateral economic and trade cooperation to a new stage, Wu said.

Rice said the US side also expects to continuously expand bilateral economic and trade relations through concrete measures taken by the two sides.

The US people and congressmen paid much attention to China's growing economy, Rice said, noting the Chinese economy has increasing influence on the world economy with its soaring growth and expanding scale and every country hopes to benefit from that.

They also exchanged views on exchange and cooperation in other fields such as energy and public healthcare.

          Mutual Understanding Needed

China is ready to work together with the United States to increase cooperation and properly handle their differences, so as to maintain and promote peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large, State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan said Monday.

During a meeting with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Tang said China and the United States, both big powers with great influence, should increase their mutual understanding and mutual trust. The Chinese side is willing to make joint efforts with the US side, by firmly grasping the main line of cooperation, to cope with differences properly and jointly safeguard and promote peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region and in the world over.

On the question of Taiwan, Tang said China has been consistent with its stance for the promotion of peaceful reunification across the Taiwan Straits.

The important speech given by President Hu Jintao on March 4 gave an eloquent proof of the principle of the adherence to peaceful reunification and safeguarding the state sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the flexibility of developing the across-straits relations, he said.

The subsequent adoption of the Anti-Secession Law by the National People's Congress, or China's top legislature, with an overwhelming vote is aimed at opposing and checking the "Taiwan Independence" secessionist activities, Tang said, adding this at the same time showed the resolve and sincerity of the Chinese mainland in developing across-straits relations and safeguarding peace in the region.

China hoped that the US side will effectively fulfill its promise relating to the adherence to the one-China policy as well as commitments in opposition to "Taiwan Independence", and will not send any wrong signals to the Taiwan secessionist forces.

Rice said US-China relations are very important to the U.S. and the US government is dedicated to handling differences between the two nations in a manner of mutual respect and cooperation.

Acknowledging that its China relations is very crucial to the United States, US Secretary of State said the American side has been working dedicatedly to strengthening dialogue and cooperation to jointly cope with challenges and further advance US-China ties.

She also reaffirmed the United States' adherence to its one-China principle and expressed the hope that the tension across the Taiwan straits will be alleviated.

Moreover, the two sides had an exchange of views on other issues of mutual concern such as the reform of the United Nations and the current situation in the Asia-Pacific region.

          FM Li meets with Rice

Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing urged visiting US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Monday to actively implement the consensus reached by both countries' top leaders on bilateral relations.

Li said that the last November consensus made by President Hu Jintao and US President George W. Bush in Chile on opening strategic dialogues and exchanging visits this year has set the tune for the two countries' bilateral relations in the next four years.

Besides, the two leaders also agreed to strengthen consultationand cooperation in crucial spheres like trade, anti-terrorism and the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, he added.

"Since the China-US relations have been steered onto a clear-cut direction, an immediate task for both countries' diplomats wasto actively implement the consensus, enhance dialogues and collaboration in a mutually beneficial way and positively handle all relevant issues so as to make sure the healthy development of US-China relations," he said.

Rice visited China in 2002 and 2004 respectively, as the national security adviser. This is her first China tour since she became the top US diplomat in January.

China is the last leg of Rice's Asian tour, which has already taken her to India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK).
