China to penalize high emmission cars

Chinese government is considering a proposal to link vehicle tax with exhaust emissions, in a bid to alleviate the pressure of increasing automobiles on the environment.

Auto analyst Feng Fei says the government could levy a higher tax on cars with an engine capacity of more than 3.0 litres.

The tax rate could run as high as 15 percent or 20 percent.

He says that the taxation is aimed at encouraging car owners to consume less oil and limit the environmental impact of cars.

A new study predicts that by 2010, cars will consume 138 million tons of oil each year, 43 per cent of China's total oil demand.

This figure is expected to grow to 256 million tons, or 57 per cent of the total demand, by 2020.
