Rooney denies bust-up with Ferguson

Wayne Rooney denied on Wednesday reports that he went against Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson by traveling back from a friendly in Clyde separately.

The Sun reported that Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Rio Ferdinand refused to get on the team bus after the game on Saturday and took a car instead.

But a spokesman for Rooney said: "Wayne did obtain the permission of Manchester United's manager to return separately.

"Any other suggestion is wrong and damaging to the player's reputation."

The Sun claimed the players were upset at having to make the 440-mile round trip by coach rather than plane.

The newspaper alleged the trio decided to rent a car and driverto get them back to Manchester quickly, but failed to ask Ferguson's permission.

Rooney skippered United for the first half of Tuesday's friendly against Peterborough ahead of Ferdinand, who has captained the side in Roy Keane's absence in the past.

The defender, who is yet to sign a new 100,000 pound-a-week contract, was reportedly jeered every time he touched the ball.
